In addition to being super cute, alpacas produce high quality fiber known for it's softness, warmth and moisture-wicking properties. Alpacas are also great animals for small farms because they don't eat very much and their soft padded feet are gentle on pastures.
Read, read, read! The Alpaca Owners Association offers educational resources on the basics of raising alpacas. You should also visit farms like ours to learn best practices and refine your goals. Alpacas are wonderful animals, but they require a lot of work and patience.
Alpacas are usually pleasant, but they can be timid as natural prey animals. They all have unique personalities, but generally behave like cats. They do things on their terms and in their time. They do not all love being pet, but most will let you touch their neck or back if you move slow and they see you coming.
Yes, but it's usually at another alpaca that has upset them or tried to take their food. They will spit at people when they are threatened or being handled in a displeasing way. Some will spit when being sheared, getting shots, or getting looked over for health issues, while others are unphased.
It is our opinion that you should not consider alpacas as pets. We love to spoil our pets, but alpacas don't thrive when spoiled. First, they are herd animals and must have at least two or three friends of the same gender to feel safe. Second, they must be sheered every year for their own health and comfort, which takes planning manpower. Third, they require a regimented healthcare plan to prevent certain issues common to alpacas. Finally, they cannot be overfed or loaded up with treats. Alpacas can easily become overweight without a strict feeding schedule, but especially when given too many treats.
